What is the best medicine to prevent heartworm disease ?
Parkway Animal Hospital knows that ProHeart 6 is the most effective heartworm preventative currently on the market to prevent heartworm disease in the Lafayette area. Over the past years, the veterinarians in our area have noticed an increase in the number of cases of dogs that test positive for heartworms, although their owners have faithfully provided monthly heartworm prevention. We have not experienced this with ProHeart 6.
- ProHeart 6 is convenient: It is given only 2 times per year!
- ProHeart 6 is given by injection, so you know that your dog has received his or her medication.
- ProHeart 6 is the most convenient and effective way to prevent heartworms for dogs in the Lafayette area.
When should I spay or neuter my dog or cat?
We believe that 6 months is the ideal age to spay or neuter your dog or cat.
Why are dental cleanings important?
- The most common disease in companion animals in periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a PLAQUE-INDUCED INFECTION of the gingiva (gums) and supporting ligaments of the teeth. If left untreated the teeth will become very loose, abscesses can develop, patients may experience pain while eating, and systemic infection could occur.
- Because periodontal disease is a plaque-induced infection the treatment and prevention of this disease is to have all the plaque removed and the teeth cleaned.
- We recommend that patients have their teeth cleaned either yearly or every other year in hopes to prevent and/or treat this disease before it becomes too severe.
What is pre-anesthesia bloodwork?
- Pre-anesthetic blood work checks blood values related to the liver and kidney function. Checking the function of these two organs prior to surgery is important because they are the organs primarily involved in metabolizing the anesthetic drugs.
- We highly recommend pre-anesthetic blood work for every patient prior to having surgery for this reason.
When should I vaccinate my puppy or kitten?
Puppies and kittens require a series of vaccinations to protect them from contagious diseases. We recommend a series of vaccinations at 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks.

After-Hours Emergency
Do you have an after-hours pet care emergency in the Lafayette area? Parkway Animal Hospital recommends Lafayette Animal Emergency Clinic.
The staff at Parkway are kind and caring. You can tell they enjoy the work they do. They are compassionate and take the time to make sure you understand what is going on with your pet. I received a follow up call after each visit to check on my pet and to answer any questions I might have. I highly recommend taking your fur babies to Parkway!
I have the utmost respect for the people who work here. I feel completely comfortable leaving my "family members" in their capable hands. They are thourogh and always complete the tasks that I ask of them and their record keeping is excellent. I couldn't ask for more from me vets office.
I love everything about Parkway! Extremely friendly staff!!! Techs and Dr. Venable take their time and show real patience and concern for my dog. I'm so glad we found Parkway!
Dr. Mike Venable and his staff are the best! I have transferred all of my animals to this clinic for their future care. Very high quality service yet down to earth when relating to his patients and their parents. Dr. Mike truly cares about his furry patients and I am so glad I switched over to this clinic. I have two dogs and a cat and he does well with all of them. Will make telephone calls to keep you apprised of any test results and is always open to discussing the wellness of your babies. The quality of prescription food they provide is great also. If they don't have it, they can order it and it arrives quickly. Love this place!
Visiting from out of town and needed to see a vet quickly. They not only accommodated me immediately, but when my puppy needed extra services they made an appointment for me at a facility that could readily address is further needs. I am extremely fussy about my veterinary care. They were First rate. I highly recommend.
